after reading about josiejunk's hike today, i thought about my plans for this evening. im taking the family to the devil's millhopper to travel down to the bottom of the sink hole a couple of times. for those of you wondering what in the world i am talking about, i thought i would share a few pictures of what it looks like and a little info about it.


Even though the park is only 67 acres , three distinct ecological environments exist in the park, based on exposure to sun, fire, and water. In the  sandhill environment, the sandy soil and regular fires result in  pine trees being the predominant vegetation. The moist soils of the  hammocks support broadleaf trees and more low vegetation, while the swamp areas only support flora and fauna adapted to year-around wet conditions.
The sinkhole is 120 feet deep and 500 feet across. A one-half mile nature trail follows the rim, and there is a 236-step stairway to the bottom of the sink. The state purchased this site in 1974, and the stairs were completed in 1976. Until that time, access in the area was limited.
